Laser treatment of varicose veins and spiders has gone through an evolution in the past. There are two kinds of laser techniques used in treatment of the veins of the lower extremity. One is from outside to treat tiny spiders and the other is from inside to treat the long saphenous vein which is the root cause of variocose vein in most patients. We never recommend using lasers to treat spider veins unless the source(leaks) have been corrected. The reason is that whether it does not work or most of the treated spiders will recur soon after the treatment. Endolaser uses a laser fiber inside the saphenous vein from knee to the groin and tries to close it using heat. This is nothing more than burning this vein using heat generated by the laser machine. Many studies from Europe and Us suggest that this technique may fail in about 10% of patients and also some patients develop blood clots in their larger deep veins(so called DVT). This can quite dangerous and blood clots can move to the lungs. Some of these patients have been hospitalized and have required long term anticoagulation. In our opinion laser is mostly effective after all the responsible leaks have been successfully corrected.
Our technique is a patented 15 minutes local procedure in office which permanently eliminates these leaks and allows creating near perfect legs an over 99% patients. VNUS closure technique is also intended to perform the same task of burning the saphenous vein from knee and closing it. The same potential problems have been also reported with the VNUS elctro-frequency technique as well.
