An old technique to treat the vein and spiders has been injeting the visible varicose veins and spiders in order to close them. Different sclerosing solutions are used to achieve this. The major problem with this technique is that most if not all these veins arise from leaks(perforators-tiny waterfalls) in the leg.
as long as these leaks are not corrected, not only the treated veins and spiders have a great chance of recurring but also many patients develop staining of their skin which can be even permanent. The key to successful treatment of varicose veins and spiders is to first eliminate the source(s) and them eliminating the left over spiders and vein with injections or lasers. Our patented harvester technique is a 15-20 minutes local procedure which permanently eliminates these responsible leaks. All patients return to their usual activity immediately. Foam sclerotherapy is a newer version of vein injections by which a potent foam version is injected into the larger veins in order to seal them. Many studies have shown that if the leaks are not corrected first, this foam can travel to other parts and create neurological problems and even temporary blinding. Another issue is that this technique does not work all the time and treated veins can open up again within a few weeks.
Before any treatment of spider veins are done by any method, these veins and valves have to be closed first. This is the key to create near perfect legs. Unfortunately most of time this step is not taken. As the result, in many patients the legs progressively look worse with repeated treatment( laser or sclerotherapy). Other devices which use a needle and heat to close the spiders have not shown to have a very desirable outcome.
EVLT and VNUS technique are designed to replace the sclerotherapy in a more permanent basis but they do not work all the time and they have their own complications as well. Many studies have shown that not only the veins can reopen after these two procedures but also there is chance of clots in the deep veins with serious side effects and possible embolus to the lung. We do not recommend these options as a very safe and effective approach for treatment of varicose veins.
