Varicose Vein Therapy in NY

Varicose vein treatment has gone through many changes over the last 100 years. Recent modalities are aimed at treating the varicose veins and spiders veins using the least invasive approach. Plain sclerotherapy and laser of the spiders and small veins have been shown not to be effective for a long period of time. Stripping of the large varicose vein also have not been effective after long follow ups. The main reason behind these failures is left over leaks(perforators) which continue to open varicose veins and spiders. Endolaser treatment and VNUS closure are among the new approaches to try to close the varicose veins . Unfortunately there have been serious complications reported with these methods as well. The heat of the laser fiber or electro-frequency fiber burns the Saphenous vein in the thigh area. The assumption is that all the varicose veins arise from this long Saphenous vein. The heat of the laser fiber and or electro-frequency catheter has the potential to damage surrounding tissues and cause skin damage and also clots in the deeper veins(deep vein thrombo-phlebitis). This latter complication can result in pulmonary embolus which is quite serious, The latest approach to safely treat the varicose veins without major anesthesia is the harvester technique. The idea behind this approach is to eliminate all the tiny leaks(perforators) which cause varicose veins and spiders. Unlike Endo-laser and VNUS closure technique no heat is used for the treatment , there is no risk of damage to the deeper veins from heat and deep vein phlebitis. All the lower smaller leaks are also identified and sealed using foam sclerotherapy. The end result should be a near perfect leg in over 99% of patients.
