Varicose Veins Removal and Phlebectomy

Removal of varicose veins have been around for more than 100 years. The old fashion stripping which is still being practiced by many surgeons is designed to remove all the visible and large varicose veins. This is done under a major anesthesia and leave large scars on the legs.

The more modern way of removing the veins is called mini phlebectomy. In this technique multiple mini incisions are made over the veins and they are removed using a tiny hook. The cosmetic outcome are much better than the old stripping but still it does not address ALL the responsible perforators(leaks). The leg may look good for a short period of time but long term results are not acceptable. The key to long term success is to get rid of all the responsible leaks at the same time as well. Some of these leaks are hidden in the lower calf and virtually impossible to eliminate with surgeries and phlebectomy. Laser closure technique and electro-frequency closure technique also fail to correct these hidden leaks in the calf. Varicose vein removal using the phlebectomy hooks are incorporated in most recent techniques and help to complement the original approach which is aimed at treating the larger veins and leaks. The latest approach to safely treat the varicose veins without major anesthesia is the harvester technique. The idea behind this approach is to eliminate all the tiny leaks(perforators) which cause varicose veins and spiders. Unlike Endo-laser and VNUS closure technique no heat is used for the treatment , there is no risk of damage to the deeper veins and deep vein phlebitis. All the lower smaller leaks are also identified and sealed using foam sclerotherapy. The end result should be a near perfect leg in over 99% of patients.
