Venous Closure(VNUS)
One of the newer treatment for closure of the saphenous vein in the thigh has been closure technique. The proximal portion of the Saphenous vein from groin to the knee is believed to be responsible for formation of varicose veins and spiders in great majority of patients. With the old fashion stripping this portion of the Saphenous vein was removed using multiple incisions in the thigh and even lower leg. In VNUS closure a probe is advanced inside the vein from knee to the groin and heated. The extreme heat burns the Saphenous vein and leave the nonviable vein(dead vein) inside the thigh. Some physicians use a laser fiber to accomplish this( so called Endolaser or EVLT). Venus closure is not always successful and some of the studies suggest a failure rate of 10% in follow ups. Another problem with this technique is the possibility of damage to the overlying skin and burn and also damage to the deeper veins thus creating clot within these veins( so called DVT). These clots have the potential of moving up to the lungs and lodge in the lungs( so called embolus). This is a serous concern and if it happens will need long term anticoagulation and even hospitalization. We do not recommend this technique to our patients due to the potential risks and also reopening of the treated vein. Our technique is a patented 15 minutes local procedure in office which permanently eliminates these leaks and allows creating near perfect legs an over 99% patients. VNUS closure technique is also intended to perform the same task of burning the saphenous vein from knee and closing it. The same potential problems have been also reported with the VNUS elctro-frequency technique as well. Unlike Endo-laser and VNUS closure technique no heat is used for the treatment , there is no risk of damage to the deeper veins from heat and deep vein phlebitis. All the lower smaller leaks are also identified and sealed using foam sclerotherapy. The end result should be a near perfect leg in over 99% of patients.
